Just in case people don't know, the first season of this Dallas spin-off comes to DVD in February.
The story had the black sheep of the Ewings - Gary, the alcoholic father of hellspawn Lucy Ewing reconcile with twittery wife Valene and relocate to a Californian cul-de-sac.
Knots didn't really take off in the UK and was a mainstay of the BBC afternoon schedules for many years, possibly because it lacked a J.R.-like central figure or any Joan Collins drag queen kitsch. It did boast a fabulous bitch figure in the scheming Abby, who stole Gary away from Val and memorably faced down her love rival with this fantastic line: "I'm not saying we're having an affair, and I'm not saying we're not. What I am saying is that I can have him any time I want him."
Rather more believable than the other US glamour soaps of the period, Knots showed characters that enjoyed better lifestyles but who still had to work for a living.

I didn't get into Knots until it was repeated on UKGold and I was stuck in bed for years. When I did I couldn't believe how good it was. What I also loved about it (in the same way as Prisoner Cell Block H) was I didn't know what was going to happen next. I'd only ever seen season one when it was first shown and compared to Dallas it was a bit flat so I knew very little about it. When it went from suburban drama to high gloss soap (but still with suburban roots) it was the best soap in telly!

Yes, bless Joan Van Ark and her forever trembling lip as Valene. Classic Knots moments: Val running down to the beach during the very first episode, when she sees the ocean for the first time. Poor Ginger - always suffering because Kenny couldn't keep it in his pants. Sid's car crash. The Val/Gary/Abby love triangle. The Ciji/Cathy storyline. Every scene with the lovely Lilimae reunited with daughter Val, otherwise known as "Sweet Pea". Karen and Mack getting married. Karen being shot and Abby getting kidnapped. The saga of Val's stolen babies. Joshua falling off the roof after being disowned by Lilimae. Abby trying to help her daughter off drugs, and then disposing of a body after thinking her daughter had killed someone. Laura driving away to her death after learning she has a brain tumour. Jill trying to kill "poor Val" and then trying to frame Gary for her own murder. Karen's "Pollyanna" speech. Greg and Paige's relationship - esp. the strip crouquet scene. Paige's mother Anne being made homeless. Greg's evil sister Claudia turning up. And the final episode - with Abby moving back to the cul-de-sac. Val and Karen grab Gary and Mack and run away!

I read an online chat with Warners in the USA yesterday via a DVD forum. Sadly, season 1 didn't perform as well as expected sales wise and there's no current plans for any more releases. A crying shame.

I loved Knots- it used to be shown on RTE in primetime and I uses to think it was great.
I think thats why I HATE Desperate Housewives so much- such a bad rip off with that terrible patronising voice over.
I remember how sad I was to see Ted Shackelford in that horrible Gerry Anderson's Space Precinct. I think I was probably sadder cause I was wondering what Joan Van Ark was up to if he sunk this low!
