Does anybody remember / Has anyone even heard of this?
It was on Channel 4 about ten years ago. It starred James Fleet as a mild-mannered (natch) schoolteacher who accidentally got caught up in a massive gang war between nice gangster Alun Armstrong and horrible gangster Kevin McNally. Annette Crosbie, Trevor Peacock, Mike Reid and David Troughton (among many others) were in it as well. It was sort of funny in parts, but frequently very (fairly) frightening (tense) and gripping (diverting). It never seemed to be repeated and has never been released on DVD, which would lead me to conclude that it may have been shit, but I remember being completely gripped by it for an hour every Wednesday night (as far as I remember) in late 1997.
So, a bit vague, but I really do remember it being good.
Ring any bells?

Yes, I thought I was the only person to have ever seen it! I haven't watched it for years though, althoguh with remarkable foresight I did tape it. I really enjoyed it at the time though. I'll have to dig it out.

I loved this series. I have been searching for a copy on and off for years. I didn't tape it as I assumed that Channel 4 would release it on video as soon as the series ended as they seemed to do this with just about every other series that Channel 4 showed. Unfortunately they never did and (to my knowledge) it has never been repeated. If there is any way I could get hold of a copy I would love to. I recently emailed Hattrick about availability although I haven't yet received a reply. There is an email address for them if anyone else wants to enquire. info@hattrick.com

Fuck me! I'm watching the first episode on on Homechoice RIGHT NOW.
It's alright. I think it got better when Kevin McNally turned up in it.

I got proper excited there, I thought you were talking about that BBC2 sci-fi drama thingy that was set on the Tube. But oh no, not the REAL Tube - the mystical underworld which the Tube was a mere plaything of. Or something. What the jiggins was that?
(Soz, didn't mean to be all hijacky!)

Are you thinking of Neverwhere or maybe The Last Train (that was ITV though)?

That was Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman, where the Tube stations had real-life equivalents (Barons Court was a Court belonging to a Baron, etc etc). It was quite good but let down by truly shit special video effects that made it look like a Britpop Rentaghost.
The Last Train was the thing where Millie out of This Life got trapped in a train tunnel and turned out to be the last vestige of humanity, causing her to whine even more than she did when Egg gave up his job to work in a cafe.

Neverwhere! That was it! Thank you both. You may return to your Underworld discussion without further interruption...

Argh! I just got massively excited and thought this was about vampires and had the luscious Jack Davenport in it but then realised that that was Ultraviolet and I am a fool. There was also another Channel 4 drama around the same time/ day of the week/ era that was about "nerds" playing an internet game that ended up with crash!rape/death on the old pier on Brighton beach - what the hell was that? I think the late 90's must have been an alcohol fuelled blur on Wednesday nights as my memory is failing me appallingly.

I think it was - with Paul Bettany as the main guy's flatmate. I remember it got us 14 year old school girls unusually excited about a Lynda La Plante thing (it was her, wasn't it?), for some reason. I also thought this thread was about the vampire-y Jack Davenport show of yesteryear.

Wasn't that because Jason Orange was in it? And the main guy was a bit hot? And it was a bit homoerotic? I might be thinking of something else entirely, mind.
