Does anybody else remember this heap of Sunday night sentimental shite with Cilla? I used to watch it every week, and at the end (when she'd walk away from a reunited family hugging and start to sing her special song) I'd get all sad because I'd have to go to bed ready for boring school the next day. Even as a 7 year old I'd get very angry at people who were still surprised when their Aunty from Australia was wheeled out, despite the fact that they'd been sat on the Surprise Surprise sofa for the last five minutes with Cilla asking non too subtle questions about them. This show is always cruelly overshadowed by Blind Date. Wow! I've foud the ending: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-tEgMmpCY24

There were two songs, I remember that. One went 'Surprise surprise! The unexpected hits you between the eyes!' while the other went 'Life is full, full of surprises...'
Classics both.

Loved it.
Cilla was really perfecting her stunned guinea pig look then.
Am I right in thinking she used to send out Spit The Dog to round up grannies?

I don't remember that, although according to Wikipedia the series started before I was born and Biggins used to appear with Cilla. I don't remember another song either.
Bring it back ITV, it's not like you can lose viewers on Saturday nights at the moment.

Bring it back ITV, it's not like you can lose viewers on Saturday nights at the moment. Oh bloody hell, what are they TEACHING you youngsters in school these days - Surprise Surprise is a SUNDAY show!

Good point. I apologise wholeheartedly, shame on me. I was thinking that ITV don't need any ratings help on a Sunday when they've got Heartbeat or Amanda Holden with some Lions, but all could coexist quite happily.

I never understood how people seemed surprised when they're reunited with someone when they're a guest on Surprise Surprise. Did they think the title was ironic and Cilla was just going to say 'Sorry chook, we couldn't trace your auntie down. She might be dead, nothing came up on the Google search'?
I tried to describe the show to my friend once as "Cilla Black reunited people, like conjoined twins and stuff". Apparently they let anyone in university these days.

I think "Life is full, full of surprises" was like the urban version when the show needed an update.
They should do an update show to see if any of the surprises turned into Pat and Margaret-esque nightmares

Hearing "Life is full, full of suprises..." on a Sunday night was agony for me. That sassy little jingle held so much emotion for me. On the one hand I loved it and wouldn't let my mom turn over until she'd sang the whole song so I could sing along, on the other hand it meant bed time and school the next day. As I got older same thing happened with other programmes. I still can't hear the theme tune to Heartbeat without a feeling of dread creeping over me

Oh my very first Sunday night theme of dread was the start of the Onedin Line (a period drama about boats). It was on right after the Muppet Show, which I would watch whilst drip-drying from my Sunday-night bath. I had to go to bed when the Onedin Line started. (It says on Wikipedia that the Onedin line finished in 1980, so evidently I was depressed about going to school when I was as young as 5).
Anyway, I HATED everything about Surprise Surprise, my mum liked it which was just torture. The introductory theme tune really is Cilla at her worst, I cannot believe her singing is what her entire career if founded on. To quote Charles Shaar Murray: "A voice like a foghorn AND nails down a blackboard".

This used to make me ill with emotions, even though I was about nine. I was really furious when one woman's 'surprise' was to meet Martine McCutcheon. That's pretty crap. She sung Perfect Moment and gave the woman a CD. Woohoo, as Sabrina the Teenage Witch would say.

How on earth did it run for so long? The 90's was really a shameful patch for ITV
