I used to watch this as a kid, and gambled on the DVDs of the first season (only a fiver for 23 episodes in several places) and, to my slight surprise, it really is great. Genuinely very funny, and not as irritating as I throught it might be as an adult. Very sharp, and well worth a small investment.

I loved Roseanne but it went on for a good 3 seasons too long. Towards the end when they brought in Edina & Patsy and the whole series was a dream was just stupid. The early days are comedy gold though.

I too used to love Roseanne. John Goodman was amazing.

My favourite line was the Hallowe'en episode where DJ wanted to dress up as a witch and Dan got all gay-panic about it:
"But witches are girls!" "This is the nineties, Dan - witches are women."

Roseanne was awesome in the early days, before Roseanne in real life got all rich and plastic, back when she and Dan were smart and sassy and unlike anyone else on the telly.
Even now I think I occasionally channel her sarcasm when dealing with my kids!

The early days are comedy gold though. There's an interview with French & Saunders in the increasingly-ropey Attitude this month. Jennifer Saunders talks about the Edina & Patsy cameo - apparently Roseanne was an absolute crazy bitch, and even Laurie Metcalfe hated her. Or something like that.

It was possibly my favourite show in the early days and probably the only time my mum, sister and I had anything in common during my entire formative years. I loved Darlene so much. Why is Sara Gilbret not a massive star and only getting cameos in CSI and Big Bang Theory (although I love seeing her reunited with David). I remember the day she got her first period more that I remember my own (because we didn't talk about such things in my house, it was a very akward episode to watch). And the episode that was entirely based around the fact that Becky had farted at school?! I felt for the girl.
It was very unrealistic that George Clooney would go out with Laurie Metcalf though. Was he the boyfriend who beat her up? (NB not in real life! I mean the characters they played.) I found Jackie a bit tiresome although loved her apartment.

Am I going mad or was there really an episode where the two actresses who played the blonde daughter both appeared? I seem to remember that (presumably due to illness) the original actress was replaced by a another actress for a couple of episodes and then when she returned Roseanne called her for something and both turned up from different directions. If what I remember is true then that is surely the most amazing thing ever.

When the original Becky (Lecy Goranson) came back, the second Becky danced around with her in the end credits to a song called "the two Beckys". They'd also spent the whole episode shouting at Becky I "where the hell have you been?", plus in the titles, Becky morphed from Lecy to Sarah Chalke to Lecy again. It was indeed amazing.
Best reference was when - for some reason - Sarah Chalke played Becky when they all went to Disneyworld, even though Lecy had played her for the rest of the season, and Roseanne said "Aren't you glad you was here this week?" I loved the end credit pomo bits - they were sometimes better than the show, even though the show was pretty damn fantastic.
