This could cause problems elswhere. Anyway they'll probably enter Eurovision next year, so 12 points for Albania.

If my knowledge of the rules is correct, their potential entry next year will depend on the national TV company broadcasting it this year. And it's only from Serbia, the country they've just broken away from.

Also, not that many countries are going to recognise it. Spain isn't because of the Basques, Israel isn't because of Palestine, Russia isn't because Russians are cunts Russia is a major ally of Serbia, Bosnia might not because it will piss of the Bosnians Serbs. Basically any country with a breakaway region is not going to recognise a unilateral declaration of indendence. The UN won't recognise Kosovo because Russia won't, so can a country that isn't recognised by the UN or the whole of the EU participate?
Montenegro managed to participate a year after becoming independant, but then again, they still had their own TV broadcaster when it was Serbia and Montenegro. Also Montenegro was recognised by everyone straight away.

The majority of the population of Northern Ireland wants to remain part of the United Kingdom, so it's not a breakaway region. And would English people be bothered if Scotland buggered off anyway?
There are places like Transdniestrovia in Moldova which are far more independent than Kosovo is now and is going to be in the near future; it is self-governed, has its own money, border guards, visas, constitution, everything, it declared its Independence in the early nineties - the problem is no country recognises it.

The majority of the population of Northern Ireland wants to remain part of the United Kingdom, so it's not a breakaway region. It was actually Scotland I was thinking of. It is much more likely to become independent before Northern Ireland. I've just watched the Berwick England vs. Scotland fake referendum programme - the inequalities in terms of social provision are frankly scandalous in a country that is supposed to be united. Transdniestr is a very interesting case in point, with a severe lack of interest from anyone else, really. Are there trafficking issues in that region?

Well Moldova and Ukraine are the biggest sources in Europe of female sex workers. When they raid borthels and strip clubs in London the majority of women are Moldovan or Ukrainian. Transdniestria is sandwiched between the two so lots of women probably come from there too.

Shouldn't it be Kosova now?
I like it when places change their name. I'm so pious about calling Kyiv Kyiv (rather than Kiev).

It depends. I don't the government of Kosovo has actually formally requested that it be known as Kosova in English. But I expect they will at some point, since Kosovo is the Serbian spelling. I suspect Kosovo is a Slavic word though in origin, as Kosovo was originally inhabitted by Slavs (hence Serbia's reluctance to give it up).
