Has got breast cancer. She's going to continue on the Harry Potter film whilst she receives radiation therapy. I hope that she gets better soon. She was criminally underused in the last film.

Oh no! I hope she's ok. She's always been one of my favourites.
P.S. Why couldn't the title say 'Maggie Smith is ill'? There are suddenly lots of thread titles with just people's names in it and, after reading the 'Captain Birdseye' thread I came down here and saw an "Anthony Minghella' thread along with a 'Keeley Hawes' and a 'Dame Maggie Smith' and I was really worried, assuming that the latter two had passed away as well. People should just SAY what's going on in the titles. I'm not having a go or owt, just musing.

I think the fact that Dame Maggie is 73 highlights the fact that women of all ages should be screened. When my mother turned 60 she stopped being reminded to go for scans and had to do it off her own bat, being told at the time it was really pointless as she was past the 'dangerous age'. She still goes every 3 years, she's coming 78 this year, and actually at the last scan they found something suspicious, although it turned out to be nothing.
The government are now saying they'll raise the breast screening age to 73 and after that it's up to you, but surely cancer can strike at any age. A family friend died in her 70s from cervical cancer having been told it was impossible she could have it at that age, especially as she's been widowed for 20 years!

My sister went for a smear test the other week and they ripped her open and sent her on her way, bleeding through her jeans.
Just thought I'd let you know that. That freaks me the fuck out anyway, as my mum had cervical cancer 10 years ago so it's really important that I get smear tests. No rippage please.
