This was on offer, cheap, so I picked it up having seen the musical. I'm quite surprised by it.
I've only finished the first part set in Munchkinland but it's a lot darker and adult than I was expecting. The stage version made me think it would be very much a children's book but so far it's anything but.
Anyone else read it?

I read the book before seeing the musical, which I think was probably the right way to do it. The book, as you'd probably expect, is far more intricate, so you'll probably get quite bored waiting for stuff that took all of two seconds to happen in the musical.
You're right though, it's a hell of a lot darker and far more complicated. And without being too spoiler-y, there's some significant differences in the story, so try to put the musical out of your head while reading (seriously, don't even hum "Defying Gravity").

I bought this in a 3-for-2 offer a while ago and haven't got around to reading it. My mate told me it was boring and not to bother, so I haven't. Is that what you'd suggest?

If you haven't seen the musical, then go for it. I really enjoyed it.
If, however, you've had the pleasure of the stage version, it'll be hard work. Good book, sure, but maybe keep it for a long-arse flight or prison sentence.

I saw the stage version first and I'm really enjoying the book! The musical is all bubblegum but this is kinda dark in comparison.

I found it a bit slow to get into, but compelling after that. I haven't seen the musical, but the idea of it just seems wrong to me - haven't they taken out all the interesting stuff?

I found the book really hard to get into, actually, and gave up about two thirds of the way through (mainly because I'd borrowed it off someone else and she wanted it back), but I've never felt regret that I didn't finish it. I prefer the stage version, heretical and different as it may be.

Just finished this and not sure why this and the stage version are even linked. They are 2 totally different stories. The stage version has borrowed a few character names but that's about it.
I'd also be concerned that people would see the stage show then buy the novel for their kids as it's a fairly adult story, with even a couple of sex scenes in it. Although not at all graphic, they're a far cry from misunderstood little Elphie in the musical.
Glad I read it and I did enjoy it, but think I was looking for a more detailed version of the musical.
