i have just been loaned this, and i was curious to give it a go. I need a pointer though. I was advised to create one character and learn to control him/her before creating a family. Good advice, i thought. I created a female gemini, fairly nice, neat and outgoing with a nice house with tv, book case, lots of space, computer. all calculated to make it easy for me to manage and learn. problem is: i cant seem to get the fun quotient up, she's perpetually miserable. even ages spent reading a book, playing on the computer, playing the pinball machine doesnt seem to make much difference, the fun indicator blips a little then drops again.
any advice ?

Like all single women everywhere she feels the ticking of her biological clock, the dread footsteps of her advancing years and deaths icy hand on her shoulders;and wonders, will I be alone for ever?
Buy her a spinning wheel or get her some action, but don't leave the poor mare hanging.

I actually found it harder to play controlling one person than I did with a whole family. If you've got two characters, especially two characters working different hours, you can split the menial stuff between them so much more easily.
My advice is to hire a maid and a gardener. It's not that expensive and saves you from having to divert time away from fun tasks to take the bins out or wash up. And yes, buy a really big telly.

If you have only one sim it is very hard to keep their social rating up, especially at first.
With two or more you can just sit them down in front of the tv and they will watch and talk to each other at the same time.
Social + Fun+
Perfect!
P.s. It was great on Sims Unleashed when you went into town and visited the fortune teller woman. If you kept getting read, eventually there'll be a good prediction which would put ALL of your quotients right up to full.

Or you can get one of them to serve breakfast/lunch/dinner while the other one has a shower/brushes their teeth/reads a book and then they'll sit down at the table (assuming you have one, and two chairs) and talk to each other over dinner. Even if one person's on night shifts and the other's on day shifts, this is usually a good way to spend your overlap to keep their social bit up. I find the Roomies family are a good one to start out with, if that's any help. And make friends with the Goths and the Newbies.

I feel like a hideous person now. This morning (yes, I know, I woke up early and started playing The Sims, I don't even want to begin to think what that says about me) my gay Sims got the chance to adopt a baby, and being typical gays they jumped at the chance.
Then the bloody thing just bawled continuously and in the end I made them go to bed and waited until a social worker came to deem them neglectful parents and take the baby away.
The most frightening part is that they got a second phone call the next day asking if they wanted to adopt another baby. Don't Sim social workers keep case studies?

Babies turn into children after about 6 days or something, but by that time your parent Sims are so unhappy and tired that it ruins everything. Children Sims are pointless in Sims 1 anyway. They get a little bit of money from Grandpa for good grades and that's about it.

I haven't played on Sims 1 for a while. But i have Todd and Sarah-Lousie Platt from corrie fame living in a bedsit. Not unlike what they were living in. I'm trying to make Todd gay. But instead of sleeping in Todd and Sarah's bed. I'm going for Bethany's.

children in the sims 1 are utterly pointless and irritating. I used to like the idea of them, but often ended up drowning them in the pool. If you really want to cheat like a King, then you can get downloads that give max-ed out moods/skills/interests. This site's fun with lots of hacked objects; www.cheapfrills.org/But ofcourse now I'm into the Sims 2, where they grow up. Shame it's so bloody slow. Plus children are as hard work as ever!

I think I prefer this to Sims 2. The camera's much easier to control which actually changes the experience entirely.

I love Sims 1. Like Tony, I drowned a few children in the pool but apart from that I found it delightful. I had the most unfortunate character, Mariah at one point. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Her kitchen burnt down, burglars stole her clock, social services took her baby away and her neighbour, Liz Figo, made off with her husband. And if all that wasn't bad enough, she got beamed up by aliens and I never saw her again
