I wasn't really that excited about the DS but after playing this in Game yesterday, I've so got to get one.
Roll on March 11th.

I love the DS. I'm not too fussed about the launch line up. Although I wouldn't mind Rayman. DS I think is a great system however (as I've yabbered on about before and ended up in an argument over! ). Wario Ware and Project Rub are both great little games and Mario 64 DS is still amazing even if you played it in 1996 on N64. 30 more stars, multiplayer and loads of mini games make it well worth the purchase I have to say. I still can't forgive them for not making Toad and Toadette playable characters though. Check out the first European adverts. YES! NAKED MEN IN SHOWER SCENES!!! www.jeux-france.com/downloads2852.htmlAnother Code looks really promising and will be out in a month or two. It has received amazing Japanese reviews and is said to be the first game to use the DS to its full capabilities. Puppy Times, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Metroid Hunters, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles DS and a number of others look to be really, really promising. But they're not out for a few months

Yes I might have to get one now too. I entered a competition before to win one but I don't think I will (sadly ) so I'm going to have to buy one myself.

I have two SPs, so how can I not trade 'n' save?
It makes me feel better about the possibility of it being a bit dire in six months time.

It makes me feel better about the possibility of it being a bit dire in six months time. What the SP or DS? I think both will continue to sell well, although the SP will slowly be fazed out. A few DS games in Japan have been getting amazing reviews from Famitsu (the Japanese equivalent to Edge near enough) so these will filter through in the coming months. Plus, DS has Nintendogs! Surely the greatest idea in the history of mad Japanese gaming craziness!!

I've had my DS for a while so i'll be getting Wario Ware upon release. The mini games on Mario 64 are awesome.

I'm a bit miffed with the DS.
My boyf got one at christmas, and while the mini game types have been really exciting (controling a sail boat in XXXY with your breath! etc) things like Mario are a bit weird without a control stick.
I was going to get one for my birthday, but I don't actually want any of the games that are coming out for it (except Animal Crossing)

as i said about six months ago, it's shite. every single game out in the UK at the moment is either completely rubbish or deeply flawed. even the good ones (polarium, wario ware, mario 64, zookeeper) are broken in some crucial way.
it'll be worth it for animal crossing, i'm sure, and meteos is good, but otherwise it's a waste of time. cheap, nasty-looking, plastic, badly-designed, a paucity of (dedicated) software and not nearly as portable or cute as the beautiful SP.

also, famitsu isn't close to the japanese equivalent of edge. and nintendo aren't going to phase out the SP in favour of the DS.

Oh for goodness sake! STE, get over the SP romance. Yes, it is a great little system but it can't do what the DS can. As this is a DS thread there is no point in going on and on about why the SP is better.
The SP is already being fazed out. Primarily from developers. Which can mean only one thing for gamers. I love the SP, but DS is ultimately a better machine.
The launch line up isn't great and it certainly isn't rubbish. WarioWare: Touched is good. Mario 64 DS, is good if you haven't played it before or want more. Yoshi: Touch & Go! is out in just 3 weeks too and that's a really good game, especially the multiplayer. I imported it from the US a couple of weeks ago and I can't get enough. in fact, it is better to import from the US as the games are cheaper and very soon they're getting Kirby: Cursed Canvas, Meteos, Nanostray and more. Then the DS can play ALL GBA games in single player. So yes, the SP is worth having.
FYI: Famitsu is the most closely related mag in Japan as Edge is to the UK taking into account different cultures. As can be seen by the similarly stringent marking for reviews.

dude, i'm not being mean, but please. i worked for edge for five years, and i'm working in development now, so the whole fanboy thing's wearing a little thin.

Sure thing dude.
As I am such an industry professional I definitely will not be using "fanboyism" in a DS post to slag the system off just to big up my favourite portable achieving absolutely nothing at all... oh wait. That was YOU!

Just my opinion, this so feel free to ignore it but:
What is it with the games section of this messageboard - it's just about the only place on lowculture I ever see people fighting. Calm down guys! This whole thing sounds just like those playground arguments about C64 vs Speccy, Megadrive vs SNES, Byker versus Grange Hill.
This is like the wide-eyed tourist coming up against the cynical local, or something. Mimternet, I agree that you sound a little bit fanboyish sometimes. Then again, I've never seen anything wrong with a little bit of obsession! Ste, you're an insider with lots of insight into interesting stuff and it's fascinating to have you contributing - but I think maybe you should sometimes chill the 'jaded critic' thing.
Personally I think the DS is a mad idea, and it's quite nice to see people make consoles out of mad ideas instead of just incrementing things. That said I don't want one really, it is a very unenticing looking bit of kit in terms of portability and fiddlyness.
By the way Edge is great (it's even great now despite featuring pointless imagery of games characters everywhere like a teenager's mag and a bloody GAMES RELATED COMIC STRIP in it, of all things that make me a bit embarrassed to read it on the train), and Ste, if you wrote that Redeye that got every single track from Sound Of The Underground into the text then, well fair play to you, bloody good work.
Oh and it's C64, SNES, Byker.

I have absolutely no intention of getting either system and at the moment couldn't care less but I couldn't believe it when I saw Zookeeper as one of the launch games on sale. Why is a game that's been free to play on the PC for over a year costing you £20 for the DS?

Oh and it's C64, SNES, Byker. All fair points. I wrote RedEye, yeah - I'm republishing most of my stuff here, I'll put the Girls Aloud one up next. I'm so glad someone noticed, though. I stopped working for Edge at the recent redesign, so I can't defend (or claim credit for) anything that's happened after then. Blame me (and my more talented colleagues, all of whom have also left the magazine) for 88-139. Moondial: Zookeeper's almost a straight port of the PC version, but there are a couple of differences that make it worth buying (the ability to interact with the blocks while they're falling being the most crucial). It's definitely the thing I've played most on my DS - it's substantially flawed, but less so than everything else out in the UK. Which isn't saying much at the moment, of course. Still, 4.444 million on Time Trial, if anyone fancies a competition.

My enthusiasm for games isn't meant to come across as fanboyism - I don't only like DS, I just don't post about things I don't like as I can't see the point, as I'm sure is clear from my posts in other threads. It is fairly annoying how Ste appears to skip over a lot of the facts to get his point across.
Anyway, apologies all round, especially to you Ste, I don't want to be arguing with you.
