Have you seen this?
The little girls and the singing cherry.
It's just weird, am I missing something?

Yeah, I've seen it, and I don't get it either. The tagline is we like music - but the girl eats the cherry. So you like music so much that you want to kill it?
Probably some wierd music is the food of love refererance nobody understands.
While we're at it, that other 3 advert with the jellyfish was wierd. Did anyone "get" that either?

I love them. Fuck knows what they're on about, but that's probably the point. Having seen both has actually improved my enjoyment - I'm looking forward to seeing more now, I think it has the potential to be one of the most interesting new campaigns for some time

In fact does anyone actually get what 3 is all about?
Video on your phone? okay
What are we supposed to make of these crappy little films and animations? They might be good enough for a B3ta type diversion, but would they make you want to buy a new phone and sign up to a new network? Is there anything useful about being on 3. Can you watch telly on it? If so will it cost a fortune?
Please someone, tell me what it's all about.

At the moment, 3 are so desperate for customers that for most people it would work out cheaper to get 3 than to stick with their existing network. Shame the phones are all horrible though.
And no, you can't watch telly.

3 is meant to be the UK's only 3G network. The reason is exists is because some idiots with too much venture capital money behind them at the height of the dotcom bubble thought the future really would see us paying through the nose to watch The Simpsons or listen to the new Madonna single via a phone *this* big with inferior sound/picture quality.
3's backers, Hutchinson, bid millions (billions?) for the rights and had to set up a phone network from scratch, which they've attempted to do.
Unfortunately they've had to set it up before the UK goes properly 3G and in a marketplace dominated by a few big brands. Which means they're pushing a product that doesn't work properly in a market which, though fond of novelty phone features(ie camera phones), doesn't use those features in a way that generates income for the service provider (ie the failure of picture messaging to make a huge impact). Plus, being a 'newbie' means it has to work 10 times as hard generating enough interest to get people to switch networks.
Hence why they are spending shiteloads on above the line marketing and advertising campaigns. The campaigns themselves are self-consciously 'wacky' because that's the only way they're likely to get attention without big product differentiation.
As a side note, one of the advantages 3G (or 2.5G as 3's network technically is) means the cost of providing sound-only calls is a bit cheaper than under the old system. This is why 3 offers cheap call prices in certain circumstances. Frankly there's little other reason for using them.
Oh dear, got carried away there. Apologies for the length.

Thanks
Well they did catch my attention even if I didn't know what it is they offer.
That explains it a bit more, I still can't see why anyone would want one.
I hardly ever use my mobile, it's pay as you go, I doubt 3 is going to be any cheaper than that.

3 has cheap call rates depending on how much money you put onto your phone each month. But, in the small print it states that your credit is only valid for 30 days anyway....so not particulary helpful if you dont use your phone that much (pay as you go)

Three make out that they are pay as you go. But to top up £25 a month for freebies you might as well get on contract.

3 have pretty much the best packages if you are on contract and use your phone a lot.

Yeah, but the phones look like small microwaves.

What does 3G mean?

3G = Third Generation Mobile communications technology. Basically phones that operate like mini PCs - download and play MP3s, videos, Flash games etc, better internet access etc. Oh, and calls and texts.
1G was the analogue network over which you could only make voice calls
2G was the digital network that enabled WAP technology. This was launched at the same time as the dot com boom and that and the huge uptake of the technology encouraged service providers to bid stupid money for the 3G licences
2.5G is what we have at the moment. Phones that can send picture messages and download and play limited multimedia files. A halfway house while the big phone providers get their 3G services up and running.
