I just had the best half hour of my life day watching old Popular clips on Youtube. It was the most sublimely ridiculous teen show of all time.
Why you gots to be such a playa hater!? (I can't believe they got away with the line "I get to be the bottom, okay?")
I want this sang at my funeral.
I miss April Tuna! There used to be a girl at my school who was the spit of her. Good times.

I have been looking for the musical number clip forever!
Oh how I love Mary Cherry and Nicole. Its such a shame the show got cancelled after only two seasons (despite the crapness of the first half of season 2). Any scene with Mary Cherry & Cherry Cherry is gold, but the musical number about giving E-Coli to a teacher is truly the best moment on TV ever. I am saving this forever now.

I wish there was a UK DVD out, there were too many genius moments. Plus you'd get to skip all the crap bits to Mary Cherry- Brooke and Sam, the latter particularly, have got to be some of the dreariest TV characters ever. Sam had the most sinister gummy smile, too.
Tofu my ASS, that ROCKS.
I remember having a slightly random crush on Lily. Not with the mohawk, though. Didn't she have to get that after they all switched hair colours and then had a showdown at a bowling alley or something? This is why I need a DVD!
The second season was indeed abysmal, I remember something about Brooke going anorexic and Harrison dying and there was a lot of maudlin hospital shite, with Ann Margret playing God, which wasn't as fun as it sounds.
My favourite moment isn't on Youtube- in the first episode when Carmen (who weirdly is all skinny and blonde now) auditioned for the Glamazons and was basically awful and cringeworthy but Brooke was all 'omg she's amazing, she simply must make the team!!'. I don't think that was supposed to be funny though. Oh well.

You can get the region 1 dvds for about £25 each tho, and amazon have £20 multi region players on sale.
My favourite bit is when Mary Cherry gets posessed by Barbara Streisand when she died her hair. And yes spam and Brooke were crap, I cheered when Nicole in her drunken rage ran them over in the finale. On the plus side though Ryan Murphy seems to have it in his contract to give one star of Popular a role in Nip Tuck every season, Mary Cherry had bingo wings in Season 1, Brooke was the Carvers first victim in Season 2 and Josh stripped naked and gave it to Quentin up the Arse in Season 3. Have you seen the pilot episode too with the non Bryce Johnson Josh? He manages to make Spam look good.

I watched the dvds of season 2 recently and it is great. Obviously it was annoying how much it focused on brooke and Sam and the tedious parents, but there were some great moments.
I quite liked the 'it's a wonderful life' pastiche when Harrison sees how he affects all the people. The best episode in series 2 was probably when it was more about Nicole than anything else and you see her plotting against April Tuna. And it's very ace when she goes to prison to see April and tells her what she did and April is like 'That's brilliant. I want to be just like you Nicole Julian.'
I love all the bitchy comments from Nicole. And the bit where Mary Cherry gave her this old nurse's knee so she fell flat on her arse. It's called Showbusiness, not Show Friends.

Popular is one of the most brilliantest TV shows ever made. This is a FACT!
I have just finished watching series 2, just this morning. I have to disagree with J a bit with regards to the focus being on Brooke/Sam. I thought it was quite Harrison centric and I don't think Mary Cherry and Nicole really have the spotlight taken away form that much, Nicole even gets her proper emotional storyline. It's also important to note that Sam and Brooke are the show's main characters. The only character compromise and pushed out in series 2 is the brilliant Carmen, who, after becoming homecoming queen, fades into oblivion. And Sugar D. But he's rubbish anyway.
The Josh-Lili thing started as sweet but just gets really uncomfortable by the end of it.
As J will know, because I text him whilst watching it, the Harrison 'It's A Wonderful Life' spoof made me cry. Like a fucking baby.
And I watched the finale going OMGWTF?!?!?! because I want to know what happens. Does Nicole become TopDog in prison? Does Brooke put us all out of her misery? Who did Harrison choose? What antics does Mary Cherry get up to with her dad? Do Lily and Josh become prostitutes and sell their bodies for money to get by turning Claw's basement into a brothel?

I read on the internet that Ryan Murphy did have a plan for season three (because the network assured him there would be one, and actively encouraged him to end season two on a cliffhanger, then cancelled the show. Bastards!), and it involved the following, which are just the ones I remember and are not conclusive. - Brooke ends up in a coma after Nicole runs her over. It turns out she broke every bone in her face, but when the bandages are removed, the only difference is she's now a brunette. - Harrison actually chose Brooke, but when Sam started crying at the table, Brooke couldn't take it and ran out (hence ending up under Nicole's wheels). - Dating Brooke makes Harrison popular for the first time in his life, and he starts dating loads of girls (in an apparent 90210 spoof) and breaks Brooke's heart. - Mary Cherry gets sent to live with her half sister B.Ho, but ends up in the dog pound by accident and is put up for adoption. - Sam turns into a drunken lesbian. - There was going to be a new, African-American character called Unique Jones. - Kennedy High gets bought and turned into a nursing home. The kids have to graduate early because the nursing home won't wait for the land to become free, and they all go off to college. Then the story flashes forward five years, where Mary Cherry buys Melrose Place and everyone moves in rent-free. Full details here: www.tv.com/popular/promblems/episode/46014/trivia.htmlI love that musical clip. For my money, the season one finale of Popular is one of the finest hours of television ever. "God, you two are like one of those TV couples that gets together, breaks up, gets together, breaks up, and then gets together again at the end of the season for promotional sweeps purposes!" Hehehe. It did annoy me when Channel Five repeated it though, because they edited out The Popular Purge (fake interactive vote where you got to choose who got killed off), so when May Tuna keels over at the end and the screen flashes "WINNER!", it made absolutely no sense unless you'd seen it the first time round.

I LOVED POPULAR! I remember Sky one starting airing the series after the "Britney in Hawaii" special and when they ran the adverts, they intercepted her doing BOMT with Brooke saying "Is it too Britney Spears?" And Nicole replying "Very Hit Me Baby One More Time" and I squealed with happiness because I'd read about it on The Wb website and knew it was going to be ace. I just think it was too mental and genius and brilliant when sandwiched between 7th Heaven and Dawson's Creek. The beginning of the second series was depressing, and not in an all but we're going to make it funny way like the first series did, it was just upsetting. Are we sure Carmen is skinny and blonde now? I've been watching "Less than perfect" on ABC1 and she is still red and full figured. I know that Nicole is off having babies with Mellissa Etheridge though.

Oh lordy I love Popular. I love how in the finale song, every time Lily sings she has a completely different voice.
I still want Christopher Gorham to marry me.

I never saw enough Popular, so thanks for the Youtube links. Mary Cherry rules. Does anyone else think her twin sister B Ho is a bit like our very own Aisleyne?

HA! Mine too! I seem to recall Carmen's "amazing" performance consisting of cupping her ample breasts and looking "seductively" into the camera. Maybe a shimmy or two. Really, really cringeworthy stuff.
And YES, Aisleyne is B Ho in real life form! How excellent! I love Aisleyne even more now!

Carmen recently - image borrowed from thehairstyler.com I'm not sure, but I think her hair may be more famous than she is in the States right now.

Harrison out of Popular(aka Christopher Gorman) is in Ugly Betty now as the completely adorable guy from accounting. He appears next Friday I think.
