As I hate my job and am happy to research anything, I have discovered the following... It's a drawing by Jeff Koons, and according to the good people at wikipedia, it's a drawing similiar to his famous "Tulip Balloons". He produced the drawing for Google, so I'm guessing possibly just a marketing ploy - boo hiss.

It's advertising 'artist themes' for iGoogle. You can have one by Rolf Harris!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who was utterly baffled by this. I thought I was just being culturally unaware, as usual.

My workmate thought they were dreidels at first, even though they look nothing like them. I wanted the madness hamsters for my theme, but when I clicked on the Edward Monkton one, it gave me pigs instead.

I wanted the sheep but it gave me the monkey. Not happy.

Anyone have any idea what the theme on google is today, so far we've come up with - champagne flutes spoons chinese firecrackers of some sort xylophone things fake flowers spades I would have guessed Pic'n'Mix scoops but I think that says more about me than the whatevertheyares.
