I have no holiday plans this summer. Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK worth visiting for a culture break? I'm looking for an interesting city to get lost in for a weekend. Attractions such as theatres, clubs, art galleries and museums are desirable. Ideally I'd to go somewhere while it is hosting some sort of city festival (art, music or film) or there is a big event on that would be worth travelling for.
All suggestions welcome. Feel free to boast about your exsisting plans to visit where ever it is you are planning on escaping to this summer.

Liverpool has a decent range of cultural attractions and is probably having some summer events as part of the capital of culture celebrations. I don't know the details though.

Edinburgh? I've got the List in front of me and the Film Festival looks good...sorry if "Go to Edinburgh and do some festivals" is a bit predictable. I would suggest Glasgow, normally but that would be a bit stupid!

Liverpool is European Capital of Culture, so we have signs everywhere and you can't move in the city centre of a Saturday afternoon because it's full of street performers and buskers. I don't want to sound like an advert, but you can always find some good cultural stuff going on in the city - there's theatres, and museums, and galleries, and they usually have something worth seeing. I've been saying this ever since I first came here 13 years ago and now the Capital of Culture thing just seems to be reminding everyone else how good it is here. There is a Gustav Klimt show that's just opened at the Tate, and the museums are always good fun (the World Museum has a smorgasbord of buttons to push) and if you're feeling a bit shallow, they just opened a massive new open air shopping centre. The Cathedrals are both wonderful to walk round, and often have little tours or events going on. Then you can get on the ferry and acquire a truly abiding hatred for Gerry and the Pacemakers. Liverpool sounds like a really good choice, especially with the Klimt exhibition as I've been a bit of a fan in the past. Thank you!

And if you're in Liverpool in the right street at the right time I'll throw some flavoured condoms at you!

Oh no, it's all in the name of love and sharing. We have lube as well, but it's not as good because it came from the Ladyparts Clinic.
We've got a fucking epic Oxfam Books and Music as well.

First weekend in August you could come to Bristol's Harbour Festival. It's great fun. There are loads of stalls, you can mess about on old boats, there are loads of brill pubs/bars/food around the harbour and there are bands and displays. Best of all it's free! www.bristolharbourfestival.co.uk/index.html

That sounds quite fun, but it is the same weekend as Brighton Pride.
I'm not sure gays and boats mix, unless it's with porn set on a boat.

You could come to Sheffield. I can't promise any cool events or anything, but you can meet me. If you're really lucky you might even meet another LC-er plus brood.
Erm... we have nice parks.
Oh! Oh! Oh! We have the Vivienne Westwood exhibition on until September, that will be good.

Go to The Lake District. There's plenty there, you don't even how to fall off a mountain like they do on all the tv shows when they visit the lakes. You can go to the World of Beatrix Potter, and visit her house, and visit Wordsworth's house (next door to my mum's childhood home, fact fans). There is also a famous car museum that is home to (amongst others) Herbie, the 1960s Batmobile and The Munsters' car.
There's other stuff too, but none that's majorly exciting (unless you're mentally over twelve).
If you want somewhere more Urban, I'd suggest Cardiff.
Liverpool is great, but try not to go when the city is in mourning for something/someone or getting overly proud of themselves because of something/someone. (I'm sure that leaves one week of the year).

I have booked my time off, my train tickets and my accommodation for a long weekend in Liverpool. I'll be down over the last weekend of July.
