Frankie's son came through the door saying surprise, surprise!, surely referencing Shell's impressions for Mad Tessa Spall?

Because by then Sarah-Lou had moved on from Britney. I bet Todd was playing her old Britney tapes whenever she was out the house, mind. Incidentally, the original TM (well, I think the second one, but you know what I mean) Tracey Barlow is a DJ in a sci-fi theme bar in Manchester. Her night is called . . . *Drum roll* Tracey Barlow plays her tapesDoes she still do that? Ah, many ahappy evening in the Fab, surrounded by businessmen'd'wacky'nightsout and women of a certain age. Good times.

And now Norris watches Bad Girls.
Speaking of which, didn't Debra Stephenson do her Cilla Black surprise surprise impression on Corrie aswell a few weeks back when she was still making a fuss about living "up North"?

For the ultimate pop-culture reference, I was quite impressed when, the day after the plane crash in Emmerdale, a character in Corrie (can't remember who, it was a while ago) was seen reading the newspaper, with the headline 'Plane Crash in Yorkshire' It was very surreal seeing one soap reference the plot in another Soap so directly. It was actually Micj Johnston in Brookside and he was reading it in his fish and chip shop.

Bev in Brookside used to watch Coronation Street. It wasn't that exciting listening to somebody in Brookside talk about a programme with four times as many viewers, but it was still quite nice.
Brookside used to ham-fistedly insert topical references to reality, on occasion. A week or so after Diana died, there was a strange, filmed-at-the-last-minute scene with David and Bev along the lines of:
David: It's such a shame that Diana, Princess of Wales died last weekend.
Bev: Oh, it is Dave. And what a horrible way to die! Cars, eh?
David: Yes. It really is tragic. She was a fine woman.
Bev: Oh, she really was. And the people loved her!
David: Yes Beverley. She really was the People's PrincessTM.
Bev: (looks thoughtful)
David: (looks thoughtful)
And political heavyweights Jacqui Dixon and Katie Rogers the week of the 1997 General Election:
Jacqui: So, who're you voting for in the election, Kate?
Katie: The election? Oh, I've not really thought about it. I dunno. Who is there?

Does she still do that? Ah, many ahappy evening in the Fab, surrounded by businessmen'd'wacky'nightsout and women of a certain age. Good times. I think she still does, and I also heard she does a club night now somewhere else (can't remember where, as the eight or nine pints seem to have flushed the memory out my system).

It was Ron who watched Coronation Street, wasn't it? I remember a scene when he'd had a heart attack (one of many) and Bev and Mike and Rachel and whomever else happened to be around at the time were sitting in the hospital corridor waiting for news, and Bev made some comment about how Coronation Street was on, and how it was Ron's favourite programme and he'd be gutted if he never saw another episode, or something. I'm sure of it. Then again, there's nothing to say they didn't watch it together, as a family, like. Awww.

There was a really memorable pop culture moment back when mad Richard was trying to kill off the Platt family. It was the scene where he kidnapped Gail and the kids and got them into the car in the garage. Tricky Dicky turned the tape deck on and made some comment to the terrified Sarah about listening to one of their favourite songs before he topped them all. The track? The You and Me Song ... by The Wannadies.

Neighbours really is the king of references...the Hoyland's seem incapable of getting through a sentence without mentioning some film/pop star, and now Steph's started it too.
But more oddly/amazing is the way they reference ex-neighbours. First we had Hannah's friend who loved Guy Pierce films. Then, in a stroke of pure genius, Toadie told Nina/Delta that she "could be the next Kylie". Then a couple of days ago Summer used Natalie Imbruglia as an example of a long distance relationship. It can only be a matter of time before they mention Delta Goodrem....or, even better, Holly Valance!

And another one to add to the Corrie canon, from the Baldwin house:
DANNY: What's going on? He's cooking, you're cleaning, have five blokes been round with a hairdryer?

my dad laughed out loud at that bit but I'm fairly sure he has no idea who the Queer Eye guys are - just got the joke that the Baldwin boys were acting a bit 'gay'
nice one dad - gay son in the room, remember?

I think we can officially claim that Coronation Street is the UK's answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hurrah!

I think Hollyoaks is trying to position itself as the domestic competition. The stupid blonde mother of the dope head told his psychologist that "he smokes more dope than Dr Dre" today. Obviously being the 'oaks it was shit, and didn't make a huge amount of sense, but it was a good effort for a beginer.

I remember Isla Fisher's character in Home and Away once having to phone Britain for some reason (to track down a long lost relative or something). On calling another person from the phone book in the vain hope it was the one she was looking for she had a conversation which was cut short by the person at the other end. After apologising and hanging up, she said to the people stood nearby: 'All they wanted to know was what's happening in Neighbours'.
Great stuff!

Before the interweb the only way of knowing what was happening in Neighbours was having some mates mate who had some relatives who went to Australia on holiday and found out what was happening. I remember my sister coming home from school one day telling me all these things that were going to happen 2 years in advance. Great days.

Another attempt from Hollyoaks today, but less a pop-cultural reference than a screamingly obvious in-joke.
JODIE WHAT USED TO BE IN GIRL THING: "How did I end up here? All I ever wanted to be was a singer."

I know this thread is about Coronation Street and not Hollyoaks, but since we were discussing Debbie Dean's singing "career", I have to ask: what self-respecting person would ever sing Michelle McManus's 'All This Time' for a paying gig? Ever?

Ouch my head hurts!
Sunday's Corrie was a torrent of pop-culture references - perhaps a touch too far fetched?
The sight of Steve Macdonald slowly realising he was the seventh member of the quiz team was hilarious, as was his face as he sat tango-ed in the make-up chair.
I was very well amused but I did feel it verged a little over the edge - all the references started to affect the suspension of disbelief that I need to enjoy fictional telly. Hope the move quickly past this and cut to the almight fury of Karen's reaction to the whole thing.
