I was more surprised at an Olivier Award-winning actress going into Hollyoaks Well an Olivier Award-winning actress did go into Echo Beach! I make myself laugh sometimes.

I see on the news that 'Lord of the Rings' is to close. I can't imagine anyone is that upset. Has anyone actually seen it? I saw it on a preview last year. Problems with the show are manyfold but boil down to it not having one song that is memorable and it ran for 3 1/2 hours! The spectacle on stage was great, you could see the money, but never having read the books or seen the films I sat there wondering why the hell they hadn't culled some of the characters who seemed to serve no purpose and it wasn't until the end that I realised there were 2 bad guys with very similar names rather than one bad guy who the cast couldn't remember the name of.

They've been working on a 'Tales of the City' musical for a good few years. I think I first heard Armistead talk about it back in 2000 when it was still being workshopped. I'd prefer they'd film the 4th instalment instead. On another site, people have been coming up with their dream casts for this, so here's mine. Mrs Madrigal: Penelope Keith Mary-Ann: Sarah from Same Difference Mouse: Daniel Boys Mona: Jann Krakowski Beauchamp Day: John Barrowman Dr Jon Fielding: Ewan McGregor Brian: Cheyenne Jackson DeDe Halycon Day: Simona Armstrong Connie Bradshaw: Ruthie Henshall

Went to see The Harder They Come at the Barbican Theatre on Saturday night. Something I would never normally have gone to see, but as I work there, I gave it a try. What an uplifting experience, and everyone in the audience by the end.
I was mildly tempted to try Into The Hoods, as Into The Woods is my favourite musical ever, but without Sondheim's music, I'm a bit wary.

I am going to see Treasure Island on Friday. More Mr Fezza's choice but haven't been to the theatre in ages and it makes a nice change.
I am mildly concerned that the a) the children out number the babysitter (I normally go for the safety in numbers approach) and b) they'll probably all spend the night on LC...

You only get crap theatre in Edinburgh, and I've only been to London once in my life, when I was 12 (I went to see Fame), so I made sure I got to see something on Broadway when I was in New York this last week. Managed to get tickets to Wicked through the hotel, and it was just absolutely brilliant. Even if they were 240 bloody dollars a ticket. But whatevs, I wasn't paying.
I gave my boyfriend the book for Christmas and he still hasn't handed it back over for me to borrow so I bought it after the show. But anyway, I am in love.

240 DOLLARS A TICKET?!?!?!?! Jesus CHRIST. That's insanely expensive. Why not just go in the West End? I tried once to get tickets to Wicked Broadway via the lottery, but I didn't get them. (The two people I'd gone with from the hostel knew the person doing the lottery, and had had it fixed in advance so they could get front-row seats...bastards)
When I did my two-week stop off in NY last year, I went to a lot of shows and got a little Broadway crazy. My favourites were definitely Hairspray (which I got discounted third row tickets to online for $79!) and Altar Boyz (got vouchers for $40 priority seating on the second/third rows). I loved the former so much I went again, and the latter so much I went another two times during that stint, returning at the end of my trip to make it the last thing I did in the States! I also really, really enjoyed the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which has now, very sadly, closed. It was brilliant fun.
Bargains are to be had, you just have to know where to find them! I still want to see Xanadu, and recommend avoiding Curtains (which is closing anyway) and the utterly dreadful and boring Chorus Line. Never have I wanted to walk out of something so much.
Ahem, apologies for the Broadway geekout moment. I realllllly love musical theatre.

Well it would cost about the same to get to London and see it, plus I don't ever have a day off, or anyone that would go to London with me, this was a holiday, and it was because my mum was taking me to NY she asked what I wanted to see, and we couldn't get any tickets for it here in the UK so we just had to see if the hotel could sort us out with anything and luckily they had two really good seats for that night. The tickets said 120 on them or something but cause the hotel uses an agency and it was for that night it was insanely expensive

You only get crap theatre in Edinburgh How can you say that! Edinburgh gets a lot of fantastic shows either prior to the West End or after they've left. In fact if you haven't got your 'Mary Poppins' tickets for later in the year, hurry up! It would bring joy to the heart of the crustiest curmudgeon!

Aw, I wasn't trying to be rude, SB, I was just really shocked at the price. It seems ridiculous to make people pay that much money! I understand your point about coming down all that way adding onto the price (which is about £50 for good seats in London, right?). Pity you had to pay through an agency - I'm glad you enjoyed it, though, it is good! I'd definitely recommend checking out possible online deals (through sites like broadwaybox.com) if you ever go back. Bungle - enjoy! I think it's just fab, though I don't know about the quality of the West End one. The Broadway cast were absolutely terrific, though. Their Tracy was A. Mazing. As was Paul Vogt as Edna. Zorro has been "cancelled" in Glasgow.
2 performances were cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday owing to safety reasons but that it should run for the rest of the week after they do more rehersals to sort out the issues that they have had.

Hairspray was SO much fun. The most I have ever enjoyed an evening in the theatre, I would say. The only problem was that Ben from Any Dream Will Do? was notably poorer than everyone else vocally, especially during a rather painful rendition of Without Love.

Anyhoo - Zorro.
Mmmm. It was far better than I was expecting and one day Matt Rawle will be the star he deserves to be but it's very oddly paced (the first half seems to go on for ever whilst the 2nd half has been bulked out by getting Adam Cooper to do a topless 5 minute dance solo) and the plot falls apart in the last 10 minutes but it's worth seeing as it has some catchy tunes, some good dancing, some funny bits and a fantastic cast.
Just don't know who'll actually go and see it when it gets to the West End.
....and the Kings was only 25% full at most, worst ever attendance I've seen in there, was shifted from my seat in the Gallery to the Upper Circle and that was "sit where you like"

I was reading today that Joanna Page, Kris Marshall and Robert Webb are going to be appearing in Neil la Bute's new play, Fat Pig In New York, I think it's called. It's not meant to be a very uplifting play.

Neil La Bute could put his shopping list on the stage and it would be more depressing than an entire weekend of Pinter.

And Una Stubbs is going to be in Pygmalion at the Old Vic from next month. Una Stubbs, star of Give Us A Clue! I'd have thought she was just a little old to play Eliza, but maybe they're going to get Kirk Douglas to play Higgins.
