It looks like they may be writing out Yolande: www.voice-online.co.uk/content.php?show=13767If that's true, I think they should avoid writing out too many background characters. Yolande could be a harridan, but she was a reliable face for show continuity. Relying too much on the star names who come and go within a few years' time can leave the show without an identity. I hope this means Patrick will get a good story.

I saw an hour or so of the omnibus yesterday and thought Jean's scenes with Stacey in the restaurant and then telling the guy who'd stood her up that she was ill were just brilliantly acted. I doubt the actress who plays Jean is high profile enough to get nominated for the soap awards (I've not got a clue what her name is) but she's by far the best thing I've seen in the show for a long time.

That's very disappointing about Yolande, and another reason why EastEnders and Corrie are poles apart. Yolande doesn't have to have a storyline every five minutes - she can just be in the background for a while, like Emily or Kelly or Dev, kissing her teeth when something outrageous happens in the Vic. She was someone for Patrick and Dot to talk to, and she was a good actress. In a couple of years time, someone will have come up with a good storyline for her, and that'll be great.
Instead the producers let her go, leaving them a single Patrick (a storyline cul de sac if ever there was one). Presumably they'll spend the money on getting Bella Emberg or Vicki Michelle or some other 80s comedy star into the show, to have illicit sex with her brother in law.

Heather singing "Back for Good" to Stacey was amazing.

I want more of the Masood family- although I think Zainab's acting last night veered too much into "Keeping Up Appearances" occasionally- what with her hurrying through the door every few seconds to make a witty aside before dashing back out again.

The Eastenders smut continues. After "nana Pat's ring" today we had Brenda: "It's a long time since I've had it polished", Mo: "Charlie was just saying the same thing this morning".
Well I never!

The goodbye for Mickey and Keith was nicely done. It would have been easy to just kill one or both of them off in the explosion and then have a few episodes of weeping, but instead they have the chance to improve their lives.
Tanya seems to go for the same man over and over and over.

That should be quite an interesting storyline if they're using Whitney's proper dad, what with him being dead and all.

Hmmm... if - and I mean IF - they do the story well, it could potentially herald a return to form for Eastenders. They would certainly be playing to its original strengths: Gritty, realistic, ground-breaking storytelling.
It's worth remembering that stuff like having long-term, likable Gay and HIV+ soap characters seems fairly old hat now, but EE tackling these 'issues' in a largely realistic way was pretty controversial at the time. I was a regular viewer as a kid/teen (from the late '80s to mid/late '90s) and it certainly kept me entertained and better informed than I might have been. Having said that, I haven't really watched for a long while now and they've completely ballsed up the things I have tuned in for, including the return of Bianca & family, so I don't hold out too much hope.

One of Bianca's exes was dead, one in prison. I don't think we are meant to know/care which was which.

One of Bianca's exes was dead, one in prison. I don't think we are meant to know/care which was which. I think the dead one is Whitney's father, the one in prison is one of the dads for the small kids. The story sounds very good, as long as it isn't going to be more than just another quick shocker to get publicity, like Jay getting stabbed or Tanya burying Max alive. I also hope this doesn't end with Ricky and Bianca getting back together, because even though I know Bianca is likely the only reason they brought Ricky back on a permanent basis and in the past Ricky hasn't been a saint himself, I don't see why he'd want to be anywhere near the current version of Bianca. If they get back together it would just be another version of the passive male character who gets to hear his wife tell him how horrible he is. Eastenders is getting a new "hunk": www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/soaps/article1366106.ece

Going back to yesterday's episode, I liked the juxtaposition between Jean and Charlie as they both have partners now (for a few days at least), and how Stacey's trying to deal with her feelings on her mother dating as well as her brother coming back to town. I think Sean's a huge bore, but the effect he has on Stacey and Jean is interesting. I'm also glad Stacey and Bradley haven't just reconciled but are actually trying to work together.
I don't think there are any stories left to tell for Phil. Or maybe I'm just worn out with the character. All those scenes about Ben were a bit cringeworthy. I'd much rather see more of Peggy with Shirley.
I hope we're supposed to see Tanya as losing her identity, because otherwise her stories suggest they don't know what to do with Tanya, but since she's popular, they can't help showing her all the time. Scott Maslen's fit, but I don't care for Jack. He's dour and smarmy and I don't think he fits in with the other characters. I don't know if there's an Eastenders "type", but like Ronnie, I think he seems very self-contained and out of place. He also seems very undefined. I don't want the writers to tell us who is supposed to be good and who is supposed to be bad, but he's just a question mark who looks good without his top on.

Was anyone else surprised it was Ronnie and Roxy's dad? Also they were on their way to Weymouth and seem to have ended up in Spain.

Well tonights episode was bloody good. Well the half I saw anyway.
I always like EE when there's a good old family bitch fight, and Ronnie Vs Archie should be almost as fun as Peggy having her hands crushed by the bent copper from The Bill.

Does Suzy remind any of you of Letitia Dean (Sharon)? I like her so far, she has a real spark about her. I hope she can liven up the Jack/Tanya/Max story. She's a good blend of the old Branning family (the Carol era) and the new.

I missed it last week so haven't seen Suzy.
Acording to DS, the Tony isn't Morgan's dad story is going to be explored. Methinks they cast the actor and then went... oops, we need to write a new story in explaining the kid's parentage.

But Morgan is mixed race, and prison-grooming dad is white! Perhaps it's another example of EastEnders' commitment to colour blind casting, which resulted in not one of the Ferreira family looking like they were related to one another.

Over Christmas I was back home in England and had the displeasure of seeing EastEnders for the first time in over a year. When you stop watching it for a while you really notice how repetitively shit it is. Max and Tanya's Christmas wedding ruined by an unwelcome surprise; Kat and Alfie blubbering away like it's 2003 again. Sharon.
About the only thing that's changed is Rita Simon's face.

Which foreign country are you living in these days?
I've dipped in and out a bit more often recently. Casting Dolly Rawlings as Tanya's mother is a stroke of genius. And speaking of stroke, has Ann Mitchell had one, or is it botox?
Not enough scenes with Linda Henry and Tameka Empson for my liking.
And are the rules on discussing famous people's possible dabbling in the homosex been relaxed like Rupert Everett in a sling? David Witts is quite the darling in interviews.
