I saw Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision last night and it wasn't nearly as crap as I thought it would be, in fact it was rather quite polished, and really good fun.
All the 10 songs were better than anything I've heard recently at Eurovision and I've had the Irish song in my head all day. I've never seen muscles like one of the dancers had (although a man in the Newport Holiday Inn did come close a few years ago) and the lycra costumes left nothing to the imagination. Some research reveals the man with the amazing body is Sergio Priftis.
And I never ever though I'd see Sally Lindsay do the splits. Does Mel Giedroyc do the splits?

I really enjoyed it though that may have quite a lot to do with the actors leotards. I thought the one who played Ronan Corr was really cute. I loved the little looks that Sally Lindsay was giving the performers as she passed them on the stage. Gareth Hale was good too, I'm glad I caught a performance with him in it, rather than Billy Pearce.

Is that definite, then CP? Only you weren't, then you were, then you weren't... These things never run smoothly! I was going on the 21st of June for the weekend, but then I found out that the cast changes on the 2nd of June, so I've had to reschedule for the 30th of May, and I'm desperately hoping that Daniel Boys does the 5.30 performance, but sadly this means that I wont be able to stalk him.

Chess In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall last night. Idina Menzel, Kerry Ellis (Elphabas everywhere!), Adam Pascal and Josh Groban. Marti Pellow was the Arbiter. He was shit.
Actually the whole thing was a bit disappointing. I don't really know Chess that well other than the well known songs and the sound mix was so poor that you really couldn't make out 75% of what they were singing (and the number of times the mics weren't turned up until the second line of a number were infuriating!) Idina was also pretty disappointing - John Barrowman would be slating her diction into the middle of next week ... "Heaven help my hearrrrr ...." Josh Groban - great vocal, acting meh, and he really needs to employ a decent vocal coach to teach him not to breathe in through his teeth before every line as it is massively distracting.
Thank God for Kerry Ellis and Adam Pascal who were both fantastic. Kerry's "Someone Else's Story" was the performance of the night, but the character of Svetlana is so strange, coming on only halfway through Act 2 to belt out a few numbers. I think they need to work her in to the story earlier to make us care.
Oh, the choir were good too, during "Merano" they helpfully projected the words onto a big screen and the choir were doing some fantastic actions. Some weird ballet sequences during all the chess games were only really acceptable because of the muscular bodies hidden by very revealing ballet clothes, frankly.

Steven and I went to see this as well. I know Chess extremely well, so was really excited about this and had to contain myself in order not to sing along. I utterly concur that Marti Pellow was shit. Couldn't understand a bloody word he was singing, and I knew all the lyrics. I wondered if perhaps Tim Rice might have changed them. Also totally with you on Menzel. Her consonants were lost about 75% of the time. I thought Pascal was good but his high notes, apart from in Pity the Child (which I thought was a terrific performance), were a bit strained. Kerry Ellis was amazing. I'm glad she got the entire first half off; she deserves extra drinking time. I did, however, think Josh Groban was brilliant. Oh, and so was David Bedella, who remains all kinds of awesome.

Latest news in the world of musicals: > 'Eurobeat' is getting a West End transfer, starting at the Novello Theatre in September. > Lesley Garrett is leading a new production of 'Carousel', touring from September, with a West End run following. > Tony Award nominations this morning - most nods going to the London-Broadway transfer of the beautiful 'Sunday In The Park With George', and a lifetime achievement award for my hero Stephen Sondheim.

That's the same problem I had. I only know 'I Know Him So Well', so I could make out every word of that, but the rest of the time I could hear singing, just no actual words. Kerry Ellis was fantastic, though. I was transfixed by her cleavage.

Eurobeat was get fun- Mel did not do the splits, however she was completely hilarious as Boyka.
The muscular man was nice to see but there was a little short guy who did it for me- very cute.
In a shock result (well according to the cast after) Ireland won! One entry has won every show for the previous 5 weeks- I wont spoil it but it was the one I voted for.
One problem- your points only go up to five- I wanted to hear Boyka say "douze point!" She never did- that is so eurovision.
Anyway, great night out but I wonder how it will play to westend audiences.

Fat Pig, at the Trafalgar Studios. Robert Webb in nothing but shorts! Kris Marshall (whom I love)! Joanna Page was godawful!

Ruthie Henshall in Marguerite. It was all right. The most sympathetic character was her Nazi boyfriend, which suggests something wrong with the characterisation. Also, in the final scene, her dress broke and she had to finish the show with her left breast on display. I blushed for her.

I'm going to see that, but not for ages yet. The other week I saw That Face with Hannah "Cassie from Skins" Murray. It's very good overall but she's absolutely dire. A fembot performance even Hollyoaks would be a bit embarrassed by.

The cast of Avenue Q against the Eggheads - BBC2 now! I'm so glad I found this while it was still on iPlayer. Daniel Boys is so very very pretty, but I shall need to have words with him for not knowing who Carly Simon is.

Well, Gone with the Wind will be gone in a couple of weeks:
" West End production of Gone with the Wind starring Darius Danesh is closing early, it has been announced.
The former Popstars contestant debuted in the role of Rhett Butler at the New London theatre in April, starring alongside Jill Paice as Scarlett O'Hara.
Following low ticket sales and a poor response from critics, the production will now complete its run on June 15. Patrons who hold tickets for cancelled performances have been told that they will receive a refund.
"From the beginning of our journey we have all worked hard to achieve the realisation of putting Margaret Mitchell's classic novel, Gone with the Wind, on stage at the New London Theatre," producer Aldo Scrofani explained in a statement. "Despite the critical response the Company have enjoyed much praise from audience members during our run and for that we are grateful, nevertheless we have made the difficult decision to close the production.
"Plans for a New York production are currently on hold but in the meantime we are pursuing various options that have been presented to us from interested parties worldwide." "

It deserved longer than two months.

Every time I look at this thread, I think of Tobias in Arrested Development and his aspirations to being an 'ac-tor' in the 'theee-ay-tre'. I'm so easily amused.
Anyway - some advice please! I'm going down to London in September to see Madonna and thinking about seeing a musical while I'm there - (insert 'are you SURE you're not gay?' here) what would people recommend? I like some of the songs from Wicked so that's a possibility.

Wicked is average, Avenue Q is great. I'd also recommend Billy Elliot as it made me blubber like a big baby (but I did cry at NCIS last night so it's not hard to get me started), just avoid Blood Brothers like your life depends on it.
I listened to the AQ soundtrack yesterday with the windows open and probably upset the neighbours with "The Internet is for Porn" but who can't love a song that contains-
so grab your dick and double click.
I'm down in London in October and may go and see it again.

I loved Wicked in New York but everything I've seen on teh internets of the London performances has been unbearable because of the actresses' grating accents, especially the Galindas, so I don't know if I could stomach it in London

Took my boys and they liked it (especially the swearing!) I'd like to go to another show soon - but taking teenage boys so not sure about Wicked or Avenue Q (actually youngest is 11 so AQ sounds too full-on?) any ideas?

Avenue Q is really great- very funny and well staged. Oh and Daniel Boys is in it.
Blood Brothers is rather dull but the last song is, for some reason, incredibly powerful and almost makes you forget how unremarkeable the preceeding 2 hours were.

I STILL haven't seen Avenue Q or Hairspray.
My friends want to see Indiana Jones instead.

I'm going to see Hairspray in a couple of weeks. I am already re-listening to the soundtrack so I know all the words - I feel very sorry for the poor sod with the seat next to me.
Mike - I'd also go for Avenue Q. It's one of those musicals that 'isn't too musical-ly', which are usually good choices.
I might also be going to see High School Musical as well....I don't think I quite know what I've let myself in for but - TISH DEAN!!! (Also, the rest of the cast all look about 25+)
